Pharmacies are proven to be the most attainable source of prescription drugs for substance abusers. According to the Nation Institute of Health (NIH), approximately 16.1 million Americans reported misusing prescription drugs in 2020. Furthermore, it has been noted that eighth grade students are more likely to misuse Adderall, Ritalin and amphetamines than high school students. The recent upswing in overdose death rates is linked to the abuse of prescription painkillers. Per the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), more than 16,500 Americans passed from the misuse of prescription painkillers in 2010 which exceeds the sum of the death rates caused by cocaine and heroin. Although there are policies in place to prevent such gluttonous activity, pharmacies lack the ability to enforce discontinuity in these trends.

The Loopholes

There are three major loopholes in obtaining more than what is prescribed: emergency supplies, out-of-pocket payments and lack of closure. All three of these activities are situational. However, pharmacy staff are trained to be alert in analyzing the validity of the situation in order to determine whether the patient is partaking in addictive behaviors.

Emergency Supplies

Emergency supplies are given to patients on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the pharmacist on duty. Some pharmacists refuse to release emergency supplies altogether based on their own personal ethics and morals. Meanwhile, others may allow it if the drug is not within a controlled class and it is an extenuating circumstance such as an out-of-stock exception, hospitalization or rehabilitation. It is up to the pharmacist to verify the truth of the patient's reasoning in order to decipher whether to provide a supply or not.

Out-of-Pocket Expenses

Patients who pay out-of-pocket for a prescription may be more subject to abuse substances in an effort to surpass limits set in place by health insurance companies. Health insurance covers particular drugs at pharmacies within their network for a certain number of days supply. Substance abusers often pass the blockade by paying cash for the prescription to avoid a third-party rejection.

Moreover, they often travel great distances to receive prescriptions even if it is out of the state. Obtaining the same prescription from multiple different pharmacies poses as suspicious activity as well.

Failure to Close Prescriptions

It is very important to ensure any prescriptions that are no longer being used are closed. Not only does it help conserve resources, but is protects others as well.

Picking up prescriptions that are no longer prescribed can be very dangerous especially if the patient is put on an alternate medication. It is quite common for specific drugs to interact with one another causing a drug utilization review exception for the pharmacist. Having unused medications in the household can put friends and family at risk due to temptation. Individuals as young as twelve years of age report misusing prescription drugs as they obtain them from within their household or relatives. Make sure to call the pharmacy for a prescription closure if the prescriber removes a medication from the health regimen. Pharmacy employees take great care in the prevention and identification of addictive behaviors. Despite their efforts, a grey area exists between the need to help others and compliance with regulations.

Social Media Slander

As everyone knows many people's favorite thing to do on Facebook is posting controversial complaints and provoking arguments. I have seen a multitudinous amount of negative posts tearing down the reputation of CVS Pharmacy. While very few individuals have commented that they have not had any issues with the company, most people have described the personnel as "absolutely pathetic," "*bleep* morons" and "unfriendly."

The Psychology Behind Reviews

Imagine you transfer to a new pharmacy. You walk in and are warmly greeted by the staff. You head to the counter where a pharmacy technician is awaiting. They ask for your name and your birthday and you receive your prescription immediately. As you exit the pharmacy you ponder about what an easy and great experience it was. Would you post a review?

A recent survey concluded that only one out of every ten happy customers leave a review. Meanwhile, 34% of people leave a negative review after a displeasing experience.

Pandemic Pressure

During these trying times pharmacies are doing their best efforts to keep up with the demand of patients. While balancing medications they are processing orthocoronavirinae testing as well. Swab tests may take a few seconds. However, the gathering of information is what takes time from personal information to insurance.

In the Bridgewaters CVS and Walgreens are the primary pharmacies in the area. The tri-town population is approximately 49,123 residents according to 2018-2019 statistics. Even though not everyone utilizes these businesses, with four locations in the tri-town region, the majority of the population are patients of one of these pharmacies who of which may be on more than one medication at a time.

Be the Change You Want to See

I am against entertaining individuals' opinionated egos. With that being said I could not sit back and watch this person verbally attack a quite demanding profession. Not only did the individual insult the company, but they attacked leadership and upper management as well. Simply, I responded with, "Become a GSM or PM and be the change you want to see." He laughed at my common and replied, "What a ridiculous suggestion."

According to Oscar Martinez, it is ineffective to declare something and expect anything to happen. Michael Scott declaring bankruptcy is a prime example. If you feel law enforcement is corrupt, then take the civil service exam to become a cop. If you feel pharmacies are too slow, then take the PTCB's and take a walk in their shoes.

Addiction has been an ongoing problem in today's society. According to the International Narcotics Control Board, 30% of the world's opioids are consumed by Americans while more than 46 people passed each day from the misuse of prescription opioids in 2016. I dream of becoming a pharmacist to be on the frontlines of preventing the misuse of prescriptions by sparking a change from the inside.

It just takes one motivated individual. Be that person. Be a change. Be an influence. Be an inspiration. Be the change you wish to see in the world.

About the Business

Matt Wood, a former BMW and Tesla technician, founded Restoration Coffee in an attempt to get out of the motor world. He wants to change individuals' perception of coffee as it is more about the flavor's potential of the beverage. With two locations (East Bridgewater and Whitman) and one location coming soon in downtown Bridgewater (wicked excited!!!) the coffee shop has greatly impacted the coffee market by offering healthier lattes, teas and espressos in addition to coffee and on-the-go breakfasts/lunches.

"Coffee is not just something you drink to keep you going..."-Matt Wood

Coffee Kidology

"Coffee is unhealthy" is a common misconception among society. The coffee itself has numerous health benefits including helping in burning fat, increasing energy levels and decreasing the risk of Alzheimer's, Dementia, Parkinson's and type 2 Diabetes. According to Harvard Medical School, a study conducted in November of 2015 confirmed a link between moderate consumption of coffee and a longer lifespan as there was "an 8% to 15% reduction in risk of death." However, loading it with cream, milk and sweetener causes the negative image of such a wonderful beverage. Let's be honest here, not many people drink black coffee. But, there are numerous alternatives to these fattening yet tasty additives.

Sweet Substitutes

To begin with, I will admit I love my coffee with extra cream and extra sugar. Too many additives, like anything, is never a good thing. To lighten up your coffee try these less-fattening alternatives:

~Almond Milk

~Skim Milk

~Oatmilk

~Cashew Milk

~Coconut Milk

While a few of them may add a slightly different flavor to your everyday beverage, they contain less calories and more vitamins and nutrients. If you are like me and have a major sweet tooth substitute all that sugar with:

~Honey

~Maple Syrup

~Monkfruit Extracts

Restoration Coffee or Restoration Matcha

Where I have tried matcha lattes from numerous places, I have to say Restoration Coffee's iced matcha lattes are by far the best I have ever had. Most lattes have a noticeable separation of the matcha powder and the milk, however, RC lattes perfect the blend well as it rich and creamy. Additionally, the Gabby Latte (mocha hazelnut) has a wonderful balance of milk and flavor which is a great way to start the day.

With wicked friendly staff and amazing lattes Restoration Coffee is the place to go for your morning coffee or on-the-go meal.
